Trend BMS Contractors Kent

Alpha Controls is a Trend Controls certified contractor based in Gravesend. We work across Kent on IQ3, IQ4, and 963 supervisor systems — installation, programming, commissioning, maintenance, and IQ3-to-IQ4 upgrades. Not a national call centre. Engineers who know the platform.

Why Kent Trend Installations Are Different

Kent has more legacy Trend kit in the ground than most counties. Schools built in the nineties, NHS trusts that never got around to upgrading, local authority offices running IQ2 panels held together by institutional inertia and a maintenance engineer who's been there twenty years. When that engineer retires, or when the panel finally falls over, FMs and building owners start making calls.

The problem is not the Trend system. IQ3 is well-engineered and there is no structural reason a properly maintained installation should not run for decades. The problem is finding engineers who actually know it. Trend has its own architecture, its own commissioning tool, its own supervisor platform. Someone who can wire a generic BMS panel is not the same person who can diagnose a strategy fault on an IQ3 controller or configure energy trending on a 963 supervisor.

Alpha Controls is a Trend Controls certified contractor based in Gravesend. We work across Kent. If it runs Trend, we know it.

What Trend Controls Actually Is

IQ4 — Current Generation
BACnet/IP native, web-based access, superior integration. The platform Trend is installing today. If you're building or refurbishing, you specify IQ4.
IQ3 — Well-Engineered Legacy
Discontinued for new installations but fully serviceable. Kent has significant IQ3 installed base — schools built in the 90s, NHS trusts, local authority offices. We provide maintenance and support without replacement pressure.
963 Supervisor
Trend's SCADA platform. Where time schedules, alarm routing, trend logging, and energy reporting live. A 963 set up poorly generates noise and missing data. Set up properly, it is the FM manager's most useful tool.

What We Do in Kent

Full lifecycle Trend services across Kent — from new installations to legacy fault-finding, and everything in between.

Trend IQ4 and IQ5 installation and programming
IQ3 legacy support and fault diagnosis
IQ3 to IQ4 upgrade planning and execution
Trend 963 supervisor configuration and energy trending
BEMS setup — sub-metering, reporting, carbon dashboards
Tonn commissioning on new and retrofit projects
LightFi wireless sensor integration into Trend supervisory
Remote diagnostics for IQ strategy faults and network issues

Why Certification Matters More With Trend Than Most Systems

Trend's architecture rewards people who have been trained on it and punishes those who haven't. The Tonn commissioning tool requires understanding how IQ strategies work before you can use it properly. A strategy is not just a programme — it is a structured set of modules linked in a specific way. If you do not understand the module library, you will misconfigure it or break something adjacent.

CIBSE Guide H is explicit that system commissioning should be carried out by competent personnel with direct experience of the specific controls platform. CIBSE TM47 sets out metering requirements that underpin any credible BEMS energy report. Neither is met by a generic engineer with the Trend manual open on a laptop.

Coverage Across Kent

Alpha Controls is based in Gravesend, which puts us well-positioned for the whole county. For Dartford, Swanley and the northern corridor we are typically on-site within the hour. For Maidstone, Medway, Sittingbourne and the Swale industrial sites, we are an hour at most.

Gravesend, Dartford, Maidstone, Medway, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Ashford, Canterbury, Sittingbourne — and everywhere in between.

Being based in Kent matters. You are not paying London rates with a 90-minute travel tag on top, and you get an engineer rather than a timeline when something fails at 7am on a Monday morning.

Standards We Work To

CIBSE Guide H defines the design, specification and operational requirements for BMS installations. We use it as the baseline for how a system should be set up — not just wired, but how it should perform and be handed over.

CIBSE TM47 sets out the metering hierarchy required for credible building energy performance data. For any Trend installation where energy reporting is part of the scope, we configure the 963 supervisor and sub-metering to meet TM47 requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions — Trend BMS Kent

How long can a Kent building run IQ3 without upgrading to IQ4?

A properly maintained IQ3 installation can run for another decade without replacement. The hardware is well-engineered and serviceable parts are still available. The constraint is not the technology — it is support and programming resource. If your engineer retires or the panel fails, finding someone who knows IQ3 becomes harder. That is why we provide ongoing IQ3 support — and we also plan IQ3-to-IQ4 migration paths so you are not forced to replace a working system.

Can Alpha Controls manage a Trend system across multiple Kent sites?

Yes. We can structure a single contract covering a multi-site estate with unified reporting, named contact, and a single point of escalation. NHS and education sites often have multiple buildings on separate BMS networks. We manage those as a coordinated portfolio rather than individual contracts.

What does Trend BEMS energy reporting actually deliver?

Trend BEMS connects 963 supervisor data to energy monitoring dashboards — whole-building consumption, sub-meter data by system, trend logs showing demand patterns. It is useful for identifying waste, demonstrating MEES compliance, and supporting sustainability reporting. But it only works if metering, sub-metering, and data logging were set up correctly at commissioning. We configure those correctly.

Does Alpha Controls hold Trend Controls certification?

Yes. We are Trend Controls certified contractors. This means our engineers are trained on Tonn (the commissioning environment), understand IQ language and network architecture, and have direct access to Trend technical support for hardware RMAs and firmware edge cases. That support path is closed to non-certified contractors.

Can LightFi wireless sensors reduce wiring costs on a Kent retrofit?

Yes. LightFi provides occupancy and air quality data without new sensor cabling. On retrofit projects where sensor wiring would require significant ceiling access or chasing — particularly in occupied buildings — LightFi integration is a programme and cost saving. It connects directly into the Trend supervisory layer.
